Target Group: 600 children (400 girls and 200 boys), aged 7-12 years, from tribal backgrounds, who are deprived of quality education

Program Location: 15 villages in Haveli Kharagpur Block, Munger Dt., Bihar

Purpose of the project / Program Overview:

The purpose of the program is to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on education of the children of the marginalized communities in Munger District, Bihar. It aims to tackle the learning loss experienced by children due to school closures, provide psychosocial support, raise awareness among parents about the importance of education, improve the quality of government schools, and address issues such as child labor and alcoholism. By establishing Bridge Schools and creating a child-friendly learning environment, the program aims to ensure that children receive age-appropriate education, promote girls’ education, and uplift the overall well-being of the community.

 Objective of the program:

  • Facilitate age-appropriate learning in language (Hindi) and numeracy skills for children aged 7-12 in 15 hamlets within a two-year timeframe.
  • Raise awareness among parents about children’s right to education and the importance of higher education for girls within two years.
  • Ensure the provision of nutritious food for children in the target villages by collaborating with school authorities within two years.
  • Address psycho-social disturbances among children resulting from the lockdown situation within two years.

Outputs Achievements:

  • Increased literacy: 70% (419) of children can read and write by recognizing all the letters and numbers, 60% (362) of children are able to identify letters and pronounce them correctly, and 49% (293) of children can read simple sentences.
  • Improved numeracy: 58% (347) of children can read and understand numbers from 1 to 100, and 55% (331) of children can read and understand numbers from 1 to 200. 58% (348) of children understand zero, and 56% (333) have a place value understanding of numbers.
  • Basic math skills: 62% (370) of children can do simple addition, 58% (348) can do simple subtraction, 60% (362) can do simple multiplication, and 51% (308) can do simple division
  • Increased parent awareness: 596 mothers have better understanding the right of their children to education and are ready to send their children for higher education.
  • Increased enrolment: 37 children who were out of school were enrolled in school.
  • Increased regular attendance: 92% (549) of children have been regularized in junior schools.
  • Improved leadership potential: 49% (293) of children developed their leadership potential
  • Improved gender equity: 16 girls have been enrolled in schools.
  • Increased parental involvement: 64% (382) of parents attend Core Committee meetings to support their child’s education
